Abstract

Actualmente, la alternancia de código es un fenómeno común en las sociedades bilingües. A partir de los noventa se habla también de translenguaje que, epistemológicamente, se sitúa más allá de la alternancia. Sin embargo, no existe consenso sobre las características que los distinguen. En este trabajo se establecen algunas diferencias esenciales para desvincular ambos conceptos. Primero, la alternancia ha quedado relegada al terreno meramente lingüístico; mientras el translenguaje involucra creatividad (expansión de repertorios) y criticalidad (concienciación social) para romper con las reglas lingüísticas y sociales. Segundo, la alternancia es un fenómeno externo al individuo; mientras el translenguaje es una práctica interna. Tercero, el translenguaje presenta un bilingüismo más dinámico. Cuarto, el translenguaje da cabida a concepciones más sociales y a la propia alternancia, que nunca formó parte de los diseños curriculares. Finalmente, el translenguaje ha hecho que, en cierta forma, la negociación de la identidad se desvincule de la alternancia.
